“Arm Day” is SO Under-Rated

Bang. Bang. This was the result of today’s HIT session.

So over the past couple weeks I’ve been dialing down the volume of my workouts and really upping the intensity. And today? Today was “Arm Day”. I dusted off (literally) one of my old HIT bodybuilding books from when I was training to get HYYYYUUUUUUGE and I went back in time to bang out a Shoulders and Arms session. Damn did it feel good. Want my workout? Read on.

Strength Quest #43: Brute Strength Training

Some days, you just have to say “F*ck It!” and push some HEAVY ass, old school weight. I’m talking weight where you can only do 1 rep at a time.

Sometimes you just have to say “F*ck It!” and load up that bar.

Yesterday was one of those days. (I didn’t update the blog last night, because I passed out as soon as I walked in the door. Literally woke up on the floor.)

After the last training session (German Volume Training…super high volume), I wanted another taste of some old school, crazy training I used to do when I was younger. Call it an ego trip, but I wanted to see where I was strength wise.

Yep, it’s true…it hasn’t happened in a while, but sometimes my ego creeps up when I see plates upon plates waiting for someone to push them around. My ego does a little taunting and then I just have to put it in its place.

So in last night’s session, I manned up and loaded the bars and “the guns”.

Here was the Session for Back and Tris:
Sets do not include warm-up sets.

Barbell Row
275#/1, 1, 1, 1
295#/1

Close Grip Barbell Bench Press
275#/1, 1, 1, 1, 1

Neutral Grip Pull-Up (weighted)
20#/6
40#/9

Barbell Deadlift
495#/1, 1 (405# + 90# in chains)
405#/1, 1, 1

Weighted Dips
Bodyweight + 180#/1, 1, 1, 1, 1

NOTES: This session was AWESOME. Reminds me of why I ever started lifting. To push heavy SH*T. Granted, my numbers aren’t up to what they once were in my early 20′s…but (1) they’re close, (2) I weigh less, and (3) my joints feel a TON better than they used to. So that’s the trade off. Now I have a line of where I stand next time I hit these heavy lifts. And next time I will at LEAST get 1 more rep. **Close Grip Bench Press could have been a bit heavier, but I’ll take it, as I’ve been working my shoulders and arms a lot in my off days by doing bag work. ***Bodyweight when doing the dips was 195.

One. More. Rep.
